This sculptural form is inspired by scleractinian coral fragments. Scleractinian corals, also known as stony corals, are the main builders of coral reefs. These corals secrete calcium carbonate, forming hard skeletons that create the structure of reefs over time. Reef systems such as the Great Barrier Reef support an extremely high level of marine biodiversity, providing habitat, food, and shelter for countless species.

Beyond their ecological role, coral reefs are important for humans as well. They protect coastlines from erosion and storm damage, support fisheries that many communities depend on, and contribute to tourism economies around the world. Reefs are also being studied for potential medical discoveries, as some marine organisms produce compounds with pharmaceutical value.

However, scleractinian corals are highly sensitive to changes in their environment. Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, pollution, and overfishing have led to widespread coral bleaching and reef degradation. Protecting these corals is therefore critical for maintaining marine ecosystems and the services they provide to both nature and people.

The works can be stacked on this structure, echoing the layered and accretive growth patterns of scleractinian coral reefs.
